This year we will be holding the Club Christmas drinks following Finals Day on Sunday 7th December. The new RMTC Bar should be in place for this event so come and help christen it prior to the Boomerang Cup.

President’s Blog – Andrew Gould

The end of the year is fast approaching, which means we have a feast of tennis almost upon us. The A, B and C grade club championships will be played this month as well as the club Ladies’ championships. Don’t forget to sign up in the club or call the pro shop if you wish to play in these tournaments. Early in December (the 7th) the Gold Racket match to determine the club champion will be played. On the same day the Ford Strachan final to determine the under 21 champion will also be played. Furthermore, you will also witness the final of the John Poolman Trophy for the club handicap championship. Lunch will be available and it promises to be a great day.

Boomerang 2009

The Boomerang will be upon us in January before we know it too. With the credit crisis several overseas teams have pulled out at short notice. We have gone from turning teams away in April to a request now for a few more local players – we will need a few reserves to fill some spaces in overseas teams, most likely Queens and Newport, and we really would like one more team from Melbourne, so if you are still thinking of playing, contact me or Julian as soon as you can. The social program is exceptional this year – the opening party at the club is more than cocktails, there will be an abundant variety of gourmet foods including an oyster bar replete with shuckers. Anyone who has been to Aiken knows how good that is! The President’s party will be in the Eureka tower (to be held on Thursday 15th January and open to all members). Brendan O’Brien has been instrumental in helping Kate Paton to secure us a fantastic package for this evening and while it is traditionally for our overseas guests and their hosts, all members will be welcome to sign up for it promises to be very special.

We will also be organising some events which are provided to ensure that the overseas players and partners have a great time. Andrew Schnaider is co-ordinating expressions of interest from the visitors – but we also need expressions of interest from RMTC members.

We have tentatively booked Golf at Kingston Heath on Tuesday 13th January (breakfast, golf and lunch) and Dinner on the Tram Car restaurant on Wednesday 21st January at 8.30pm. We need an indication of numbers before we confirm these arrangements so could you please advise Andrew Schnaider on andrew.schnaider@gmail.com or Kate Paton on katepaton@bigpond.com if you would like to participate.

Other activities might include a Bridge night, a trip to the wineries, etc. – keep an eye on the notice board for the details and a signup sheet.

RMTC Courts

You will have noticed that the court surfaces have been renewed and the lights replaced. We could not have done this without the generous support and help from Michael Petrucelli and Wally Cockram. We now have perfect conditions to play tennis. However, there are already marks from black shoes on the court. As a committee we have asked on many occasions for people to wear non-marking shoes. We have spent a substantial amount of money on this renovation. Anyone found wearing marking shoes of any colour will be asked to show cause why they should not be suspended from the club.

To conclude on a happier note, I have recently returned from France where I was fortunate to play on every working court, including Pau. The court there has been unfortunately modified for Trinquet, but the floor and walls are still excellent and it is in a beautiful setting. It looks very promising that it will be restored to its former glory in the next year or two. Also, Paris has been renovated and will actually cut a little now, Fontainebleau has now had the dedan changed to its original state and the talk of a new Bordeaux club is still there, so French tennis is on the up! Disappointingly though, the court at Versailles is totally closed now, even as a museum. The French don’t seem to think it is of any interest either to eccentrics like us or to historians. It was last open in August 2007 for an art exhibition.
